"Hello, I'm Andy Cockram, proprietor of the Irby Mill and your genial host!
I Started my career in pubs 17 years ago, leaving my Wirral home to go to London to help my uncle in his pub for a week, which turned into 3 years, ending up with me becoming the Deputy Manager. I left there to return home for a couple of years but was drawn back to London with he offer of a Deputy Manager position at the Scarsdale in Kensington. Two years later years I made history at Scottish & Newcastle by becoming the first Deputy Manager to be tasked with a new opening of a Chef & Brewer pub, The Rose & Crown on Kew Green - my first managerial appointment.
After 18 months at the Rose & Crown I moved a short distance to run the Bulls Head on Strand on the Green in Chiswick, a lovely Chef & Brewer on the banks of the River Thames.
2 and a half years later I was on the move again this time to a new company, Young's & Co. Here I was responsible for a new opening of a pub they had bought from Mitchell & Butler. This was a massive pub/restaurant in Weybridge Surrey which had undergone a massive £1.2M refurbishment. During the three years of my management there we won best presented pub of the year award from Young's brewery in 2008.
I was just about to move to a new pub in Richmond in Surrey when I was informed that the Irby Mill was available to lease. After some careful consideration I decided that the time had come to move away from managing and become my own boss.
The Irby Mill was an ideal pub for me as I was brought up on the Wirral and knew just how important the pub used to be to the locals. After taking the lease on the 2nd November I moved the family in, closed the pub for 2 weeks to complete a refurbishment of both the bar and kitchen and opened the doors to the public on Friday 13th!!
The feedback I've had from the locals is really positive and very reassuring as it appears that they are all delighted to have their local returned to a Real Ale pub with a great traditional home cooked menu in place. The fire is lit again, the atmosphere is warm and friendly so why don't you come on by?" |
